Proceeds to benefit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
The North Greene High School football team will don pink jerseys for the home game against Hampton on Oct. 23 as part of a statewide initiative for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
North Greene has joined 36 high school football teams in hosting “Pink Out Nights” sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance of Tennessee. All proceeds from the events are donated to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
U.S Nitrogen also has committed for the second year to sponsor the pink jerseys for the players, who can keep the jerseys after the game. Robbie Helton, administrative services and logistics manager for US Nitrogen, said he hopes to make the $2,500 jersey sponsorship an annual event.
“Our employees are local people who want to support local high school athletics and at the same time recognize an important health initiative,” Helton said. “We appreciate being able to partner with North Greene High School to raise awareness and fight for a cure for a disease that will affect one in eight women in their lifetime.”
“The Huskies are honored to be a part of this,” North Greene Head Coach Scott Verran said. “All of our players know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, and the team wants to do its part in the fight against this disease. Pink is a great color on us.”
The Oct. 23 game against the Hampton Bulldogs kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at North Greene High School.
Local merchants have pledged donations, and fundraising T-shirt and bake sales are planned in Greeneville to raise awareness for breast cancer and funds for research. Pink versions of the Farm Bureau Insurance “Charlie” hats and pink visors also will be on sale at the game.
“The Huskies are excited and the other kids at North Greene High School are, too,” said Wayne Hughes, agency manager for Greeneville Farm Bureau Insurance. “This event has brought the entire community together for a great cause, and this game really shows the breast cancer survivors in Greeneville that their friends and neighbors care about them and are motivated to do something about breast cancer.”
This is the fourth year that Farm Bureau Insurance of Tennessee has been the statewide partner of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. American Cancer Society’s signature campaign raises awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. The program unites the community to honor breast cancer survivors; educate people about how to reduce breast cancer risk or find the disease early; and raise funds to end breast cancer. Farm Bureau Insurance of Tennessee has raised more than $1 million for the charity.
“The American Cancer Society is proud to include North Greene High School and Greeneville in our Making Strides campaign,” said Lacie Simonton, senior director of partner relationships for the American Cancer Society. “The way that the community has come together for this fundraiser speaks volumes about the school, the town and the entire state of Tennessee.”
