October 12, 2018

Renovation and renewal campaign signals new era of equal opportunity

The Knoxville Area Urban League will celebrate the reopening of its headquarters Wednesday, Oct. 17, with Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero, Urban League board, staff and community partners.

Located at 1514 E. Fifth Ave., the $2.6 million renovation project included new construction and upgrades to the current structure, maximizing the use of space and making the facility high-tech, energy-efficient and accessible. The atrium lobby includes spaces for homage to founders and donors who have made a lasting impact on the Knoxville Area Urban League.

“Our updated home is beautiful and functional,” said Phyllis Y. Nichols, president and CEO of the Knoxville Area Urban League. “However, our goal of impacting the community through equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion is our true purpose, and this facility will elevate our outreach and impact. We appreciate all of our partners who helped to make this a reality.”

The organization can expand its core services – education, workforce development, housing and entrepreneurship – as well as host community events in new common areas.

The reopening celebration will begin at 10 a.m., and parking is available adjacent to the Knoxville Area Urban League headquarters.
