Gerdau employees support childhood cancer research

September 6, 2016

Knoxville steel recycler Gerdau employees participated, along with family members and friends, in the Butterfly Fund of East Tennessee 5K held at Sequoyah Hills Park.

Gerdau employees taking part in the Aug. 20 race included Daniel da Rosa, Kirk Fredrickson, Jamie Gass, Jeremy Guy, Chip Keim, Chris Kimble, Jena Kreuzer, Brittney Parker, Charlie Wallin and Bill White. The Gerdau team raised more than $800.

The Butterfly Fund of East Tennessee Foundation was established by the families of Emily Barger and Maddie Harrill, two young girls who died from a rare form of childhood cancer just weeks apart in the summer of 2008. In addition to the 5K, the foundation holds a number of events to support research, treatment and services dedicated to defeating childhood cancers.

To date, The Butterfly Fund has donated $215,000 to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and $20,000 to CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, a national nonprofit foundation that accelerates the search for cures for children’s cancer by driving innovation, transcending research barriers and solving the field’s most challenging problems.
