Dr. Johnny Altawil has joined Gastrointestinal Associates, increasing to 13 the number of gastroenterologists caring for patients at the leading Knoxville GI practice.
“Dr. Altawil’s passion for his specialty and expertise make him a welcomed addition to Gastrointestinal Associates,” said GIA founder Dr. Bergein F. Overholt.
He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Altawil is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and his specialty is gastroenterology.
Dr. Altawil was born and raised in Damascus, Syria. He attended a Christian elementary school and finished high school with honors. He completed his medical doctorate degree at University of Damascus School of Medicine in 2006 and subsequently moved to the United States for medical training.
Before joining Gastrointestinal Associates, Dr. Altawil completed his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center in Detroit. During his training, he served as a gastroenterology chief fellow, presented in national meetings and published several abstracts and articles on various gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders.
Dr. Altawil loves music, listening to different music genres and playing the guitar. In his free time, he also enjoys being outdoors and staying active in many sports, especially soccer.
