The Knoxville Area Urban League invites area children, ages one through eight, to a “Birthday Party for Dr. Seuss” on Saturday, March 2, from 9-11 a.m. at the Cansler YMCA, 616 Jessamine Street in Knoxville.
“Children will enjoy games, story time and face-painting, and each child will receive a goody bag,” said Urban League President and CEO Phyllis Nichols. “There is no cost to attend, but reservations are required so that we have enough games and goodies for all.”
The event is being hosted by the Urban League’s Project Ready National Achievers program as part of the group’s service learning curriculum. National Achievers is open to students of color in grades 10-12 with a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average. This year’s class includes 153 new scholars and 80 returning scholars, representing every high school in Knox County, as well as Oak Ridge and Jefferson County high schools.
Project Ready is an innovative and unique college access program that provides a comprehensive, research based approach to preparing young people and families for the challenges and promise of higher education. Project Ready is geared to reach the whole student and is comprised of three key components: Academic Development, Social Development and Cultural and Global Awareness.
“Throughout the school year, National Achiever scholars and parents participate in weekend activities, projects and initiatives, helping to enhance our students’ cultural, academic and college preparatory experience,” said Nichols. “This ‘Birthday Party for Dr. Seuss’ is one of those events.”
