Apps and Connected Devices Can Help New Parents Breathe Easier

November 6, 2018

November is National Child Safety & Prevention Month and new parents can use all the help they can get keeping their baby safe and healthy. Why won’t he sleep? Am I ever going to sleep again? What time is it? When did he last eat? If mom and dad can remember where they set their smartphones, help is just a tap or two away. According to a recent U.S. Cellular survey1, one in three smartphone owners use their device to manage health and roughly one-third of consumers own a wearable connected device. Of those that do not, nearly half have considered buying one.

Many apps and devices can help parents rest a little easier. The Owlet Smart Sock is among the most popular connected smart devices for new parents.

“At U.S. Cellular, we’re always looking for new ways our customers can integrate the latest technology into their lives in ways that make daily tasks easier,” said Nathan Waddell, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Knoxville. “New parents have their hands full with the needs of a newborn, so our friendly associates are here to share recommendations on how smartphones can make the chaos a little calmer.”

U.S. Cellular recommends the following smartphone apps to help new parents:

  • To keep watch on things when the kiddo (finally) sleeps, Cloud Baby Monitor ($3.99) turns smartphones into another set of eyes.
  • Baby Tracker – Newborn Log (Free) offers an easy way to track health, daily habits and mark developmental milestones. And because parents will likely record those milestones by snapping photos with their phones…
  • Baby Pics – Photo Editor ($2.99) will highlight the important moments.
  • As for sleep, Relax Melodies (Free) will help the exhausted grownups find just the right soothing sound for their little one, and maybe even themselves.

And here are a few smart devices that can connect to a smartphone or tablet:

  • The Owlet Smart Sock tracks the heart rate and oxygen levels of infants while they sleep and will automatically alert parents if the levels fall outside a preset range.
  • The Fisher-Price Smart Connect Mobile projects a color light show onto the ceiling and provides soothing white noise or nature sounds. The device offers full control via smartphone interface.
  • The iBaby Air monitors and cleans the air of toxins and allergens, while allowing two-way audio interface.
  • The Wisenet BabyView Monitor syncs with smartphones and allows camera control, two-way communication and even night vision.
