The South College Professional Brewing Science certificate program will graduate its first class on Thursday, April 3, at 6:30 p.m.

The graduation is open to the public, and attendees will be able to sample beers brewed by the graduates. The celebration will take place at Saw Works Brewing Company, and tours of the Knoxville brewery at 708 E. Depot Ave., will also be available. Admission is $10.

“Our students have been working very hard over the last nine months,” said Todd White, program director of the South College Professional Brewing Science. “We’re excited about their future and the future of the craft brewing industry.”

According to the Brewers Association, growth of the craft brewing industry in 2012 was 15 percent by volume and 17 percent by retail dollars. The craft beer industry alone now employs more than 100,000 people in the United States, and that number is projected to continue to rise.

Proceeds from the admission fees will benefit the newly established Curtis McArthur Scholarship Fund, which benefits future students of the South College Professional Brewing Science program. Curtis McArthur was the Tennessee representative for the SweetWater Brewing Company, based in Atlanta, Ga., and died suddenly on New Year’s Eve 2013.

“Curtis was excited about the possibility of a brewing school in Knoxville,” White said. “We want him to continue to be a part of the industry and our program by giving this scholarship in his name.”

The Professional Brewing Science certificate program prepares students for successful employment in the brewing profession with a combination of classroom work and hands-on experience in a brewing facility.
